I am a lover of crafting! DIY projects are my jam – I love anything from woodworking to sewing and everything in-between! Unfortunately, I don’t get around to doing them as often as I would like. Do you ever feel that way? That you don’t have enough time to do the things you love? I hear it gets worse the older you get and the more kids you have…. sounds like I am probably running out of luck, darn it.

My favorite part of this project (or any sewing project for that matter) is fabric shopping. For the most part, there is something so satisfying about finding colors, patterns, and textures that match so brilliantly as the result of all the endless combinations in fabrics. For that reason, I wish I had my own fabric store – guess I better start collecting!

ABC – How to

One of my favorite sewing crafts is a fabric alphabet. I first use my Silhouette Cameo to cut out a stencil of the alphabet in the font and size I want and that starts the process!

HINT: you can use this stencil over and over again for next projects – so find scrap fabrics that you can use as your stencil – this will save you so much time and money. And if you don’t want to use fabric as your stencil you can use paper instead!

For the center of the fabric alphabets I use the quilt batting as the middle stuffer. This batting allows the alphabets to be more firm and easier to grip for most children. Here is the quilt batting I like to use.

It is really quite a simple process. Make a stencil of the alphabet; find the fabric you want and cut out the letters, then sew the fabric and batting together, and then cut the extra fabric away to make it perfect. Trust me, children love to play with this.

4 Ways to Make it Unique

1. Customize it by using different stitching’s. With most of the alphabets I have made I used either a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch. It could be fun to add a floral stitch or a box stitch – or anything else you want!

2. Use scrap fabrics from a quilt you’re making to have the alphabets match. Perhaps you could quilt pieces together to make it a quilt itself or just use the bigger scraps – either way its super unique!

3. Above all, my favorite thing to do is to put them in this suit case. It is the perfect way to store them and it makes such a great gift bag that is not just reusable but so stylish that you’ll want to keep it out in the open.

4. Furthermore, make your set unique by making extra letters to be able to spell your last name or to spell everyone’s names in your family.

I have made at least 10 of these alphabets – one for all of my siblings who have children and then one for my mother to have for the grandkids to play with and one for myself.
